The 20^th annual Superintendent’s 100 Super Scholars awards program was held Tuesday, March 7, 2009 in the Bruno Great Hall at Birmingham Southern College.  Superintendent Phil Hammonds honored the top 103 sophomores in the Jefferson County School District.  Selection as one of the Super Scholars is based on a student’s performance on the PSAT, a national test that is the first step in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The purpose of the program is to encourage and support those students who have the potential to become National Merit Scholarship winners. Super Scholars received certificates and pins designed specifically for the award.  Kate LeCroy, a former Super Scholar from the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School and current student at Birmingham Southern College, was the keynote speaker.

Jefferson County’s National Merit Scholarship Finalists for 2009,

National Merit Hispanic Scholar, and National Achievement Finalist were also honored by the Superintendent and received certificates for their achievement.   These students are finalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program which awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year to outstanding students.  Many college and universities reserve special scholarships solely for National Merit Scholars.
